peri-implantitis-imiDental implantology calls for the implant of a titanium dental prosthesis. During this process, the bone tissue of the tooth can be attacked by bacteria, causing an infection that is called peri-implantitis.

So peri-implantitis is a disease that can compromise the success of the dental implant. When peri-implantitis appears, you should immediately find the proper treatment so as to avoid the worsening of the patient’s conditions.

Inflammations of the peri-implant tissues are of two types:

  • Mucositis is an inflammation that exclusively afflicts the mucosa around implants. The advantage is that it is totally reversible if diagnosed and adequately treated.
  • Peri-implantitis is, instead, an inflammation that afflicts both the mucosa and the bone surrounding the dental implant. The lesion is visible with an x-ray. From a clinical point of view, it causes bleeding, pathologically deep periodontal pockets, suppuration, pain, and a change in the color of the gums.

With peri-implantitis, the afflicted tissues are no longer capable of forming the biological barrier necessary to maintain the mouth in health.

The bacteria that cause peri-implantitis

Among the bacteria that cause peri-implantitis there are mainly anaerobic Gram-negative bacilli:

  • Prevotella intermedia
  • Porphyromonas gingivalis
  • Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans?
  • Prevotella nigrescens
  • Treponema denticola
  • Tannerella forsythia?

Note that these bacteria are the same that cause periodontitis in natural teeth. This is why it is fundamental to always verify the health conditions of the patient’s mouth before inserting the dental implants. In this way you can prevent the bacteria from infecting the implants.

Peri-implantitis treatments

peri-implantitisTreatments for peri-implantitis can be pharmaceutical, or – in the case of the innovative protocols developed by IMI Clinic – use lasers.

Using lasers makes it possible to attack the bacteria that cause the disease, even when they are hard to reach because they’re localized in a hidden part of the oral cavity, hard to treat with drugs or traditional therapies.

Furthermore, lasers have the enormous advantage of sterilizing the oral cavity from bacterial attack. This makes it possible to eliminate the direct cause of the infection, immediately arresting its progress and propagation.

IMI Clinic is a network of dental clinics that sustains research and technological and procedural innovations in the cure and treatment of dental diseases and peri-implantitis.
